Modern art from Patricia Piccinini, Felipe Pantone, Madeleine Berkheimer and many others De Kunsthal boasts more than 3,300m² of exhibition space in a striking, modern building, designed by Rotterdam architect Rem Koolhaas in collaboration with project architect Fuminori Hoshino of architectural firm OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture).
The building resembles a huge, square box with a narrow, high tower. Classical building materials, such as marble and parquet, are combined with more fundamental as frivolous materials, such as corrugated plates, concrete, steel grids and tree trunks. All public areas – three exhibition rooms and a gallery – flow into another, mutually connected by a single continuous ramp. This makes the building also accessible to visitors in wheelchairs. Other museums are in close proximity, such as the unique Depot of Boymans van Beuningen, the Natural History Museum and soon the fully renovated Museum Boymans van Beuningen. All of these are at only a few kilometres’ walking distance from Erasmus Bridge (the bridge next to Cruise Port Rotterdam).
