Rotterdam will soon have a new port experience centre: Portlantis

Portlantis will be the ultimate spot where the broad public will be introduced interactively to the dynamic world of the port of Rotterdam. The opening is foreseen as from the autumn of 2024. Portlantis is located where land and sea meet, in the southwest of Maasvlakte 2. Its design is new and unique and covers more than 3,500 square metres, divided over five floors. It is going to be a fascinating and inspiring exposition and meeting place. The striking building was designed by architectural firm MVRDV, which also designed the Market Hall and the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen.

Breathtaking flight through the port area

Portlantis tells you the story of the port and what is going on there 24/7, how the port is interwoven with everyday life, the economy, life in general, the developments concerning digitalisation and the energy transition. Visitors can also learn what the port will look like in the future. With a VR headset, one can experience a world yet unknown in which augmented reality plays a role. One can also gain insight into chemical, maritime and logistical processes in a spectacular, interactive way.

Port tours on land and water

The view of port and sea from the rooftop walk is spectacular. Port tours on land and water depart from Portlantis as well. The Educational Information Centre Mainport Rotterdam (EIC) organises special programmes and excursions for pupils and students in Portlantis. A shop and a catering facility are of course also part of the layout.
This new ‘port house’, Europaweg 902 in Rotterdam, is realised by the Port of Rotterdam Authority. Reachability: from the cruise terminal by taxi (recommended price: €220, including 1 hour waiting time). By underground from the city centre of Rotterdam to the Hook of Holland in 40 minutes. From the underground station, it is only a short walk to the Hoeksveer ferry, which takes you in just under one hour to Maasvlakte 2 – definitely a most enjoyable journey.
